From 2013 onwards, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu could draw one million tourists a year thanks to a strong advertising campaign, according to the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur).
Carlos Canales, head of Canatur, set this number as a goal, considering that this archaeological site has attracted over 630,000 visitors annually in recent years.
“This is a strong ad campaign aimed at emerging markets where world tourism is building. Brazil and Uruguay grow over 40 percent,” he said.
Meanwhile, regarding European countries, he noted that Russia is becoming a potential source of tourists.
Canales also estimated hotel investments to amount US$1 billion in the next five years, despite current bureaucratic obstacles.
“There are nearly US$500 million projects. Therefore, we have to remove bottlenecks and facilitate investment to promote them,” he noted.
